I just tried it from the Download page on the mag site, and it downloaded fast and completely.

I'm grasping at straws, but perhaps there might be a problem with your ISP??

I'd tried for the past 4 days to download the latest mag by clicking the link on the main page to download the .pdf and then save. The file would come in to about 7MB, then quit and a dialog box that connection to pclosmag.com was broken would appear. I tried this several times. I wondered if this site was having a similar problem as the main pclos site. Today, still the same problem, but I successfully downloaded by going to the new download chart and clicking there. This is on a fully updated pclos 2010 with KDE 4.4.5 using Konqueror. Are you aware of a site problem that might cause a server break?

When this is over someone needs to send Texstar a case of what ever he drinks. Scary to think how even a Linux server can be brought down despite the best safeguards.

If I'm not mistaken, the server was taken down intentionally by those who run it. This prevents the spammers from doing any further damage or harm. ISPs and sites get hit daily. So this is nothing new.

Often times, it's a trade off between making things easily accessible (sacrificing security), or making things very secure (sacrificing accessibility and ease of use). The spammers gain entry, slipping through the security net. Once in, they then attempt to gain a higher access level (hacking). Once they find the method to gain the higher access, they then have full access to membership databases and can wreck havoc on the forum database.

So it's not so much a case of a "Linux server" being brought down. Mostly, it's most likely a case of software vulnerabilities and lightened security that are being exploited.

Take a chill pill on the "Linux server being brought down" stuff. Most likely, that is not the case. Not to say that can't happen (every OS has vulnerabilities). But the open nature of the Linux code makes Linux one of the most secure out there.

Is it going to be back soon?

BluesMan,

I completely understand how much you miss the regular PCLinuxOS Forum. I'm having serious withdrawl.

It seems (from scattered reports and sources) that the main forum was hacked by some spammers. Texstar is currently working on the situation, and hopes to have the server back up by sometime this evening (8/6/10).

For updates, visit the PCLinuxOS Twitter page. Texstar will update it as time allows and developments occur.

Meanwhile, why not download the latest (August 2010) issue of The NEW PCLinuxOS Magazine?

Stay tuned! I'm sure the regular/main forum will be back up sometime today.
